Solicitation: Data Entry

Postby captnmartin » Sun Aug 15, 2010 4:51 am

Someone has to do it.

I need volunteers to begin typing up the original ruleset into ODT format (used by openoffice)

Don't worry too much about formatting at this stage of the game, just get the words off paper into electronic medium.

Anyone interested?

Well, I was gone for a while, so the project dropped off the radar, but I remain committed to getting it out the door and playable.

Well rather than odt I was looking at making pdf's of all the books.
I have a number of the books already scanned, I just need to reproduce the layout and type the text so we can have a searchable clean copy and I would be more than willing to trade my services/assistance in this project if someone can send me a scanned copy of Airman's Gazetteer.
Its is the only book I don't have yet cause I am not willing to pay $40 - $50 just to have it sent here.

Yes, there are many different text recognition software programs out on the market.
But I will tell you a little known truth about them . . . if you can type at a basic speed of about 30 words per minute, then you can type faster than those programs can produce text.
Those programs are renowned for picking up stray artefacts and blemishes in ink/paper, etc, and assigning words/characters to them, most of your time is spent proof reading and editing the text afterwards.
They are often more trouble than they are worth, but they are still fun to play with!
Whilst I wouldn't recommend them for big projects like this, I still encourage people to go and give them a try, I got one for free a few years ago with my printer, it was called Abbyy - Fine Reader, I still play with it from time to time when I am bored. [one thing it does really well is that it can replicate format and text size.
