Commuter Autogiro (Gyro) from MM

Postby Thom » Sun Apr 21, 2013 1:40 am

Ever since there have been airplanes, people have been trying to combine them with cars. Some ideas are kinda cool and others are obviously dumb. The Car/Giro pictured at the top of the page is just too cool to ignore! The cartoony tear drop shape is era perfect and it just screams Crimson Skies to me. This image MUST BE included in the genre as the daily commuter of the common man! From Modern Mechanix, July 1935.

I cannot find any evidence that the Pitcairn Autogiro Company or Pitcairn Aircraft Company, AKA: Autogyro Company of America actually ever made this model but they did manufacture many, many other planes and gyros.

The nearest one I can find is the A/AC-35 which is pictured beside the Model T in the lower image on the page. This was their "Roadable" model which was originally submitted for the competition.

Look into the Cierva C.25, made by DeHavaland. Only one example was built- but it SCREAMS 'I am the prototypical Crimson Skies autogyro!'
Southrons, hear your country call you!
Up lest worse than death befall you!
To arms, to arms, to arms in Dixie.
