Random Assignment Tables

Postby Phoenix » Tue Mar 27, 2012 5:30 pm

Alright, so in my National Design Trends topic I said that I'd created tables to facilitate the creation of random air forces, which I now present for you. Each nation that I've completed a table for has both a heavy fighter and a light fighter table (or roll to determine which type), so all you need to do is choose what type you want and then roll 1d10 and see what you get.

Due to a lack of information about many of the minor nations, I have so far not been able to create RATs for them; if I come up with them, I'll post them here. The General table is meant to represent aircraft that are common across national borders, and which frequently see private use, whether by private security, commercial security, mercenaries, pirates, or low-grade local militias. Such forces may also include aircraft from nearby nations; in these cases, I have rolled to see which table they used for each aircraft.

Perhaps an example is in order. For a campaign I am playing with a friend, I needed to generate an enemy pirate group which operated between the Confederation of Dixie and the Collective. For each plane, I first rolled a d3 to determine which table they used, with 1 representing Dixie, 2 General, and 3 Collective. I then rolled a d2 to determine type, with 1 a light fighter and 2 a heavy. I then rolled a d10 to determine the exact plane.

Again, a disclaimer: These tables were designed to create random enemy units for one-off games; as such, they are a representation of the most common aircraft utilized by each nation, as well as any aircraft that are specifically mentioned as being commonly used by certain units. Due to the fact that certain aircraft are canonically very common across North America, you will notice that these aircraft show up quite often - some aircraft show up on almost every table. Less common or more specialized aircraft will typically not appear on these tables, and they are not meant to include every aircraft used in North America, or every plane a unit might fly. As such, if you are creating an important unit or one for persistent campaign play, I recommend you use these tables sparingly as guidelines or recommendations. You may, of course, modify these as you please, changing aircraft assignments or substituting homemade planes (I stuck to canon aircraft). Enjoy!

Thank you Phoenix, I was really looking forward to see these tables! They will very likely see good use in our next campaign when it comes to random opposition.

For a general table I could also see a d100 (or d%) roll to be made. Thus the rare planes would only get a single entry, the average plane 2 or 3 and rather common ones 4 or 5. By that mode all planes will eventually come up. Although the mentioned lack of information on smaller nations (and also on a lot of planes) will make it hard to create such a table...

Nevertheless, this is a great basis for some variety!
Many happy landings!

Awesome!

I like the D100 idea too, as it would make things more exciting if you can pull a good aircraft.

I'd add Mockingbirds to the Texas list, since they are a front line fighter, but I'm a tad bit biased there. ;)

I am a huge fan of this sort of thing, and I developed a campaign section for a sourcebook for FASA in a similar way. Your random assignment table would fit in perfectly. Very cool stuff.

I also developed a "solitaire" version of CS, where the opponent aircraft are flown semi-logically. If anyone is interested, I could write a quick abstract and provide detailed rules along with the campaign stuff. It plays pretty well, especially if the goal is testing CS aircraft capabilities in simulated combat.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the positive feedback. I'm really interested in game design, so this means a lot to me. Patrick, the reason I didn't add the Mockingbird to the Texas table was because I was also using this table to generate some members of my friend's unit (they're ex-OKFF) and I didn't want him to be able to randomly pull a Mockingbird. I wanted them to be a big deal when they showed up, and if he wants one, he's going to have to work for it. ;) If you want to use the Mockingbird on the table, I'd recommend replacing 3 (Valiant Mk. II) and 7 (FL12 "Cutlass") with the Mockingbird - I'll put this on the table so people know. I'd also be really interested in seeing your solitaire rules; they'd be really handy for players who can't find someone else to play with or who want to test out a new plane design.

And now, folks, because your wish is my command, a d100 Random Assignment Table! This whopper of a table includes every, and I mean every, canon plane (not Autogyro) created for Crimson Skies. If you want a completely random plane to fly, simply roll d100 and there you go! Pulled a Defender or M112? I hope you have better luck in the air. Got a Phantasm or an Intrepid? Looks like somebody's got connections. Rolled a Raptor or Mockingbird? Sounds the Air Rangers have some very pointed questions to ask you...

Enjoy!
