DIVING SPIDER PLANE To HURL Big BOMB (March 1935)

AVIATION’S newest wartime l threat is rumored to be a plane, tiny enough so that a fleet of them will fit into a dirigible, which, when released, will guide huge, two-ton bombs to within a few hundred feet of their objective.

Like giant spiders clutching bottle flies, they will zoom into power dives, each carrying tons of destruction.

Fantastic? Not if recent experiments are carried to their logical ends. The use of the power dive as a means of attack is not new.

When attached to a carrier, the bomb becomes an integral part. It is released only when a direct hit is a certainty. After releasing the bomb, the plane can return to the carrier or act as a interceptor fighter.

This was the March 1935 issue. Pretty crazy plane, right? Perfect for a CS plane. Which country builds this one do you think?

That level of sophisticated, yet elegantly simple brute force, just screams Hollywood and the Empire State to me! Of course, it would immediately be copied, Texas, Dixie and ISA would certainly have their own versions in no time at all. . . I could even envision a torpedo variant used by nations with naval forces or vulnerable shorelines. Consider another variant which carries three smaller bombs that equal the weight of the big one, carried stacked one above the next in a magazine fashion. Still huge bombs but with the option of a second or third shot in the advent of a miss or even to engage multiple targets set up in priority. I love the pulp visual of this beast!

Patrick? Would something like this be possible under the Z&B rules?

I think it's possible under the standard rules, since it is a fighter-sized craft. The largest bombs in ZB are 2,000 lbs, but I don't see why a 4,000 lb bomb couldn't be customized into the gaming world. The design is definitely Crimson Skiesy. :)
