Carrier Air Wing Saratoga

Postby SteampunkIronRider » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:11 pm

After the collapse of the United States, the Empire States acquired a handful of naval vessels including the fleet carrier Saratoga and the dreadnought battleship Texas, which had made its home port in New York. The Empire States rechristened the Texas as the ESS New York, and in 1932 began design work on a new class of battleship, the New Jersey-class. The final design was approved in January of 1933, and by November, the keels had been laid down for the ESS New Jersey at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and her sister ship, the ESS Pennsylvania, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Both ships were completed by the end of 1935, and fully commissioned in July of 1936 following their shakedown cruises. The New Jersey-class was designed with dual short flight decks, and was capable of carrying a squadron of planes.

The ESS New Jersey was assigned to the Saratoga carrier battlegroup, and a squadron, the 15th Expeditionary Squadron (VE-15), was detached from Carrier Air Wing Saratoga and assigned to the New Jersey.

Just one mention: In FASA Canon, Howard Hughes purchase the Texas and gave it to the Republic of Texas as a gift. Ol' Hughes was pretty Texan in FASA. (RL to in some ways).

Looks good. I always like to think that naval vessels have more influence in CS than FASA said. What layouts you thinking for the battleships?

Interestingly enough, the Texas had a sister ship - the USS New York - which was stationed on the west coast (or possibly in Hawaii) when the nation collapsed. Perhaps President LaGuardia purchased the New York and the service contracts of the crew (those that were willing, anyway) to bring the ship home?

I understand why navies are under-represented in the CS world, but think they would be a staple of every nation that isn't landlocked.

Aircraft are the bane of shipping, and that would hold true especially in the world of CS, but there would still be a lot of imports/exports coming via surface vessel.

I like the write up for the most part!

Nice.

However, since carrier operation require a special kind of planes I doubt that the standard planes would be able to survive carrier operations.

Maybe the characteristic "Navy plane" would be something to think about.

Would be nice to see some 'wet navy' designs for CS.
Might take that as a challenge.
There are precious few designs that look like they might be able to be adapted to operating on a carrier deck.

Hence the need for a "Crimson Seas" rule adaptation. . .

I would use Victory at Sea, by Mongoose Press. The books are not TOO expensive if you buy them on Amazon; I found them for about $19.00 each.
It is a simple system, has a great deal of flexibility, and allows you to put your own ships in- though it takes a little bit of thought, there are no official creation rules but the system is easily figured out. Use it in conjunction with the Springsharp program to build your own ships, and you have a ready-made Crimson Seas.

There is a new edition due out this year- I'm not sure how that one will work, but if t is like the last one, it will be excellent.
