Build Off!

Postby foxmalcolm » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:59 am

G'day guys!
Just thought I would paste this link of my model build off with fellow forum member quinmalkiq.

We went to the Australian Open Plastic Scale Model Championships Expo at Sandown Park Exhibition Centre on Sunday, whilst there we picked up a couple of identical 1:72 scale kits for $5 and decided to enter the competition unofficially and after the fact.

We decided for the competition to be fair we would follow the rules for a beginner level entry OOB [Out of Box], so basically as per the rules, basic model repair and alteration is allowed but no customisations are permitted, basically if it is not part of the original model then it is not allowed.
In addition to this it is permitted to include parts that are included in the instructions but are absent from the kit, also Gun barrels/ports/etc are allowed to be drilled out as is the rescribing of panel lines.

The only freedom of the build is that paint schemes and markings can be, whatever we liked.
All work has to be documented & we have just one week to complete it!

I decided to research my build for a day first.
I ended up deciding to recreate Lt. Von Bruen's plane from Howard Hughes's 1930 film"Hells Angels".

Pretty cool. I've never had the patience for model planes. Outside of CS pewters that is :D

This is a fun competition, just need some judge's, final photo's will be uploaded this weekend by myself and fox after we do comparison side by side photo's, same still frame's with both plane's present and close up on details either attached to replace missing or well painting details.

But I look forward personally to some good old critique...

PS: Thank you grant for fixing up my account.

Thank You All,
Fox: Prepare for your match, mwhahahahaha!!...

Good Afternoon Montana,
FYI mostly;

Landing gear done in a combo of Red + Black, including lower wing and Struts...

Wheels rimmed in black with red centre with same red for lower wing and black for struts (dry-brushing brown later).

The craft itself has received a shading (Black Wash) with a Drybrush highlight for the Green / Brown and Silver, the tail has been done in Red/Blue, Washed and Drybrush Highlight...

Once the Upper wing and remaining Struts completed (Red upper wing + Black w/ brown drybrush), a very careful Extreme Edge Lining will be done to the entire craft...

Apart from the competition, I have prepared custom made 'lines' so I can add all the wiring required between struts etc... and a neat display base along with some more extreme detailed shading and highlighting carefully wet blended onto the entire model with a red/white checker pattern to all the red/white...

I am looking forward to Saturday to show off the finished competition product.
Thank You All and Photo's later this evening...

Good Morning All (or Afternoon/Evening - depending on time zone)...
I have finished the build off and paint off - Fox I do believe has finished but need's to upload photo's, we extended the competition a day due to real life getting in the way for the both of us.

I am rather happy with the final product. The only thing I need is 'micro-sol' for the decal to smooth it out and lastly some weathering washes.

Do feel free to start voting once Fox has uploaded his, we need to determine the winner.

I feel that the picture quality is better with the green one so I do not know how fair it is for me to say:

green one
