Happy 4th of July

To all you Americans.

And for the rest of the world: You guys sure missed out

Awesome day in general. Great weather, played up all our liberties and the like.

And just a thought:

In the midst of all the fireworks explosions (ESPECIALLY...those bought on Native American Reservations. They're better....truly than other stuff.), keep in mind:

July 4th means a whole lot more than a chance to gorge on food and set off fireworks. It's important to remember everything that our forefathers risked and sacrificed to gain our freedoms, and the men and women who have did defending them for 240 years.

Sorry for sounding..somber/important/uppity, but the 4th is in my opinion as IMPORTANT a holiday as there is in the US of A.

And, now back to our festivities and merriment.

BAH HUMBUG!

But seriously we don't have anything like the 4th of July here in Australia . . . at least not anymore . . .
We used to celebrate Guy Fawkes night til it was banned sometime in the late 70's [before my time]
But I grew up with family members who were adamant that the current generation should not forget the the 5th of December, so we went out bush with illegal fireworks and celebrated.

Poem wrote:Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.

By god's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

I don't know if it was all the rain we've had lately or the rednecks when even nuttier this year but, all evening my town was blanketed in a firework born fog. The wife's allergies went completely berserk.

You do not need rednecks for that, it is the same here is Germany on New Year's Eve.

Our fireworks were lame this year, technical issues delayed things far too long, then it started raining when they finally decided to set them off manually. . .

What do the British call the 4th of July?
Thanksgiving. ;)

Isn't there a certain irony celebrating the 4th of July on a Crimson Skies forum?

Not at all, the Americans (And they are all still Americans) would certainly still celebrate the 4th as Independence Day, a day of pride they would all share. AND they might have a new national holiday in addition. It's kinda like Christmas in some respects. Christmas is a commercial holiday that really has nothing to do with Christ. (And really never did, but thats another topic!)

In Mexico they celebrate the 5th of May, Cinco de Mayo, as a national holiday, it was a smashing victory over the French Foreign Legion and Mexican Imperialists at Pueblo in 1862 and not their "Declaration of Independence" which occurred Sept 15th 1810.

In France, they still celebrate Camerone Day, from an honorable defeat in the same war, on 30 April 1863 a French Foreign Legion unit of 62 men with 3 officers was escorting supplies to the besieging French, English, Spanish and Imperialist Mexican forces at Pueblo when they were ambushed by roughly 2000 Mexican irregulars. Making a stand in the village (Hacienda) of Camerone, they fought until they ran out of ammunition when the remaining six survivors faced a bayonet charge. They had accounted for hundreds (The actual numbers will be forever in dispute) of Mexican casualties. Three survivors were given the honor of escorting the body of their commander back to France as a show of respect. The French Foreign Legion still uses the battle cry of "Camerone" to this day.

Point I am making is that national holidays are a point of historical pride. And the broken United States would still share that one common bond despite everything else.
